general questions
-
TCTSY classes are for people living with the effects of complex, relational trauma and follow the Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) model. If you feel you live with the effects of trauma or this style of practice is beneficial to you, you’re welcome in class.
-
No, you don't. We can talk about your story during a discovery call, but we never share trauma stories in class. You may be anxious or nervous sharing personal details about your trauma history with me. That's understandable -- they're your personal details, and we don’t know each other! You can choose if, what, or when you share. The TCTSY model has the same benefits with or without the facilitator knowing participant's trauma histories.
-
Sometimes emotions can bubble up as you explore sensations through embodiment and movement. This experience is normal, and there's space for it within the practice.
TCTSY facilitators actively hold space, attuning to what's happening for participants and adjusting how the practice is guided. You're welcome to co-create the intensity of a session or class by making choices that support your needs, including (but definitely not limited to) voicing your needs out loud, being still, leaving for a break, or talking to the facilitator, a friend, or your therapist after class.
-
It’s not. We don’t share our trauma stories in class. We do build community, supporting each other where we are in the moment.
-
You might, depending on the room temperature, your clothing, and how you choose to express the forms. Because embodiment, movement, and yoga can bring emotions to the surface, you might also notice a sweat if this happens.
Practices are guided slowly to allow time to build safety, notice sensations, and make choices. Although you can choose to move more quickly or with more effort, sessions and classes at Thriving Tree are focused more on mental health and wellness. If you're used to power yoga or a vinyasa style, this could be a balancing complement to your existing practice.

Classes are offered with community pricing, either $22 or $44 per month. Whichever amount you choose, it’s automatically billed each month until you cancel.
-
Each of us have varying access to money and different wellness goals. Community pricing is an open invitation for how much you pay. You have space to privately consider your financial access and your current life circumstances. These considerations can shift for all of us, so you're empowered to choose what works for you.
-
In the past, I've tried out donation-only services, flat pricing structures where everyone pays the same rate, and traditional sliding scales where income verification or needing to request an alternative payment option is common. None of these models feels comfortable for me. When each person considers what investment amount works for them, we have the opportunity to collectively create sustainable, life-giving community for every participant and the facilitator.

TCTSY is a verified clinical treatment for complex trauma and PTSD and can also be used in conjunction with traditional talk therapies. You can watch a video about the creation of the TCTSY model on this page. If you’re interested, you can read the latest study verifying TCTSY as clinical treatment.

Yes, I was certified in 2018 as a TCTSY-F and re-certify each year through CEU credits and a live practice review with Dave Emerson. Since 2020, I’ve also been a mentor in the 300-hour TCTSY Certification Program and offer continuing mentorship to currently certified facilitators.

I am not a licensed clinician. A way to distinguish boundaries is that clinicians/therapists/counselors can verbally process (talk) with you about the what and why of what’s happening. They may focus on the past or present. I offer a way to somatically process what’s happening in your body in the present moment or how you’re feeling as it comes up. It’s outside of my practice to verbally process through stories or address why they are significant or came to the surface for you.
-
If you need additional support beyond the end of practice to come back to center, I can usually stay on past the end of practice. We can practice more to move toward grounding and coming into the present moment.
Some participants also find it useful to take what they experience or what comes up in class into sessions with their therapist.

The focus of TCTSY classes is to counter the effects of complex trauma. We also have opportunities to build community with each other although we don’t talk about our trauma stories.

You’re welcome to do what’s best for you, coming late or leaving early. When you enter the live class, your camera is automatically off and your mic is muted. There’s no dings when you enter or leave either, so there’ll be no interruptions.
-
Because technology isn’t always the most smooth, we connect and catch up for 5-10 minutes. I’ll ask how people are doing that day and if people need anything specific for practice. We’ll then practice for 30-40 minutes. Sometimes, we go through psychoeducation handouts which relate to various aspects of trauma and the TCTSY practice. On the days we go through a handout, practice can be 20-30 minutes.
-
Classes are generally 4 or so people each week although who attends from week to week may change. The class capacity is 8.
-
There’s no sharing about your trauma in a TCTSY class. We work to build community and safety with one another, so the beginning of class includes catching up and small talk with each other. You can choose to participate, or you can listen and participate when and if you’d like.
-
You might notice a few differences. The main one is the amount of free choice throughout the practice. You might also notice that I practice along with you.
-
Yes, all classes and library resources are trauma sensitive and led by a professionally trained TCTSY-Facilitator with extensive trauma and yoga training and experience. Kate is not a clinician.
